The Standards of Operation Manual for Alberta stables is now available

The draft of this doccument was available to be viewed and submissions made on the content until March 5th, 2014. We appreciate everyone who took the time to give us their important feedback. Every facet of the stable industry in Alberta including: stable owners, operators and managers as well as stable staff and clients were asked to provide input. Public input was critical in our effort to ensure that this manual reflects a collective understanding of an equine facility's expectations and recommended practices in Alberta. Everyone was encouraged to provide comments and suggestions about the manual and all submissions were made through the online system.

This valuable manual was developed for all stable owners and operators alike. In addition, two public forums were held in fall of 2013 to discuss the content for this manual in Edmonton at Farmfair International as well as at Spruce Meadows in Calgary. These public consultation periods have helped guide the direction of this manual and helped to generate the content needed for inclusion.

Horses 101 SeminarsGetting Started With Horses

Everything you always wanted to know about horses but didn’t know who to ask!

The General Horses 101 seminars cover the topics of horse care & nutrition; equipment; assessing stables; keeping horses at home; and horse selection. Presenters for the seminar are three well-known horse industry professionals: Ron Anderson, Les Burwash and Muffy Knox.

In response to requests from past Horses 101 participants, we have created a second seminar in the Horses 101 seriesfor those wanting more in-depth information on horse behaviour and equipment. This seminar will expand on these topics from the general seminar, including demonstration on live horses, and will be presented by Ron Anderson and Muffy Knox.

If your club, stable or organization is interested in hosting a Horses 101 or 201 seminar in your area please contact the Horse Industry Association of Alberta office at 403-420-5949. Makes a great fundraiser or membership drive!

Is your horse special? alt

Each month, as a part of "Eye on the Industry" in the HIAA eNews, we feature and Alberta bred horse who has made an impact. This may be a champion of competition or a champion in some less public way. If you have or know of a fine Alberta horse that fits the bill, tell us why and each month we'll feature one horse that stands out from the herd!
